After couple of rough years – struggles at work, challenges with a child, and an unexpected financial loss, I came across a reference to American monk, Thomas Merton. He said an essential part the monk’s practice is accepting with gratitude whatever is placed in his bowl for the day. Deal with what life presents you but be grateful for it!
I can tell you that is NOT what I wanted to hear! I didn’t feel grateful for my struggles, I wanted them to go away. THIS is not what I had bargained for. I had worked hard and been diligent. THIS is not what I deserved. Was it?
Sometimes we get more than we “deserve” and sometimes it feels like we get less. It just is. You may get downsized, go unrecognized, or have to deal with the consequences of a natural disaster. Whatever it is, it is in yourbowl.
We can mope, pout, or rage, OR we can be curious and say – what do I want to make of this?
Let me know what you are doing with what’s in YOUR bowl.
Until next Tuesday. YIPPEE!
Elizabeth

My bowl is empty. I sit here on day seven of a year long sabbatical, gazing into my bowl, excited by all the possibilities that await me. Such a blessing. So grateful.
Sherri, that is so exciting. I’d describe your bowl as FULL of possibilities and FULL of space.
Would love to hear your thoughts as you move through this exciting time.

My wife is very fond of Thomas Merton. She told me he was electrocuted in a shower that was too short for him. What a sudden shift of consciousness! I am guessing he was grateful!
My book talks about the challenges I have had to face around money. It is now available for pre-ordering on Amazon…take a look at https//www.booklaunch.io/gbenjaminbingham/makingmoneymatter
Thanks Ben and thanks for writing on this important topic
Elizbeth
My book speaks to this question of transforming adversity through gratitude.
