Look at the headlines of blog posts, magazines and pop-up ads.  You’ll notice something they have in common.  They make you feel like you are missing out . . .

The Secrets to Financial Success.
Five Things Every Woman Over 40 Should Know.
What You Don’t Know About _________ (health, career, your house, your spouse, your dog, etc…) Will Cost You!

Everywhere we turn there are offers and admonitions that suggest that without the knowledge or advice of a well-meaning (for the most part) expert, we will lose the opportunity of a lifetime.  True love will never find us.  Fame and fortune will elude us.  We’ll never be as smart as we could be if we would just buy the book, go to the seminar or take the advice!!!

I have to confess, I have been a bit of a junkie for that “next thing” that was going to give me the answers.  I used to believe the key to knowing what I needed came in a three-ring binder with beautiful colored tabs separating fat sections full of information that would make me better, smarter and more capable.  Then it was CD sets, seminars and online programs.

There are amazing and valuable things we can learn about our careers, our money, and ourselves – just to name a few.  Valuable programs that hold benefits for real people.  Don’t get me wrong, I go to seminars, have a coach who is incredibly valuable, read articles and go to conferences.  I, too, have written a book, have this blog and will soon produce a series of online programs that I hope some of you will buy.  I’m actually a big believer in lifelong learning, and this is not about whether you join, attend or participate in myriad seminars, programs and conferences out there.

But it’s important not to accumulate the products and experiences because you believe someone else has the answer for YOUR life.  Believe me, they don’t.  You are the ONLY one who can know what it right for you.  Consult others, learn new things, yes.  But the only true expert on you is YOU.

So talk to the person who knows you best and let me know what you discover.

Until next Tuesday.

So true. I have gone thru cycles of wanting this information and dismissing it out of hand. Elizabeth, your conclusions are true of so many other aspects of our lives as well.
