On a recent weekend, I spent a day south of Seattle exploring Mt. Rainier National Park with my friends. Curious about how Rainier’s height compared to other mountains, I looked it up and was reminded it’s not just about elevation, but also prominence.
Elevation is the distance above sea level. Prominence is the distance above the surrounding countryside. Rainier has both, giving it an imposing and majestic presence.
When a high peak springs from the high plains, like many in Colorado (the article online told me), the perception of height is diminished. Whereas a peak rising from a low base can appear to tower over you.
This reminded me of people who are so concerned with “looking big” – having prominence. They hang out with people they believe will make them look bigger by comparison. To those folks, I invite you to consider what big really means?
Is it bigger in comparison to others or in comparison to yourself? The “bigness” worth pursuing is the one that challenges you to be all YOU can be, independent of others.
Then there are others who “hide” among taller peaks so they will appear smaller and less intimidating. They believe that standing out, having prominence, may alienate others. Or they may look around and say, “I must not be anything special,” failing to consider that they are surrounded by other tall peaks.
When you think about your life, your career and your business – leave comparisons alone. Seek your own elevation – the highest, most satisfying, most meaningful life you can imagine.
Until next Tuesday. Think Bigger Act Smart Live Richer.
