You may have been too young to remember when Diana Ross and the Supremes jumped to national attention with the great song “You Can’t Hurry Love”. Someone had posted a video on Facebook with a selection of Motown hits that had me groovin’ to those well know hits all weekend. And, as I was singing along with Diana Ross, I realized it’s not only love but lots of other things we try to hurry that hurrying may not help.
Most of us hurry everything: ourselves, our spouses, our children, our employees, our co-workers, even our pets! Hurry up Rover and do your stuff, we have to leave right now!
Recently I was reworking a particular juicy chapter of my book for what seemed like the nth time. While I’d talked about the concept for many years, in writing, readers told me it was confusing. Unsure of what to do and how to create a better explanation, I decided not to hurry it but to work on other projects and see what came up.
I was preparing for a couple of workshops when I had a breakthrough in my own understanding – clarity hit like it never had before, almost like magic. Once I had the clarity, it took me almost no time to write the troubling section and send it to my editor.
Whether or not you believe “Your Can’t Hurry Love”, there are many things that even in our hurry up world, just need to time to unfold and become clear.
Have you ever had an idea or answer come to you after waiting? How did it happen? Do tell.
Until next Tuesday.
